Old Dienstberger House
Dienstberger House
229 East Second Street

The Dienstberger house, the first brick house in Delphos, was built prior to the Civil War, about 1861, by Jacob Dienstberger, a German immigrant and one of the early settlers in the Delphos area. It is one of a few remaining structures of this style in Delphos, and is located at 229 East Second Street, just east of the downtown area. It stands next door to the former Dienstberger/Thornell Blacksmith Shop (the current Jack's Pizza). Dienstberger was engaged in the blacksmith business with Israel Thornell. It is the oldest brick house in Delphos. The building is presently unoccupied and owned by the Commercial Bank, which plans to build an annex on the site. The Dienstberger house must be either moved or razed.  A preservation group has organized to try to save this historical Delphos landmark. They are hoping to raise the money to move the house to a new location.

On Monday, July 10, 2000, the Dienstberger house was moved to its new location on the corner of East Second and North Washington Streets.  Merkle Heavy Moving Inc. contracted to prepare and move the historic house.  The cost of the move was $36,000.
